Week 4 Workday

Only a handful of people volunteered this week, because our workday was scheduled for the same time as homecoming. In spite of that, we – Bonnie, Jessica, Monika, and Trace  were able to fix part of the fence and plant arugula, clover, radishes, and spinach. It is a little late in the season to be planting; however, we hope, hope, hope that our new crops will have the chance to grow.

Some of what we planted! We buy all of our seeds from Seeds of Change.

Spreading clover seeds over the bottom tier.

Monika watering the clover, which we decided to plant in order to introduce nitrogen into the soil.

Watering the arugula, radish, and spinach while Trace weeds.

Week 3 Workday

Unfortunately, the week three workday was canceled due to our lack of an extension cord and a key to the gardening hose. The former was an issue in that we needed to power a drill in order to fix the fence; the latter was an issue in that we needed water to moisten the soil after planting the arugula, radish, and spinach seeds (which we postponed until the week four workday).

Week 2 Workday

Today's workday was even more productive than the last. Tons of people volunteered- Becca, Erez, Kristen, Ryan, Sara, Shelby, Trace, and I among them. We weeded, rejuvenated the compost, prepared compost lasagna, and strung our squash plant (to minimize its threat of being tangled).

Today's pluckin's! Tomatoes, beets, basil, and a pumpkin! (The products of our finished product).

Next week we hope to plant clover, spinach, arugula, and radish.

Week 1 Workday

Last Saturday, DIRT had its first workday. Most of what we (Jessica, Kristen, Maddy, Monika, Shelby, and Shoshana) did to the garden was weed.

As you can see from the picture of Monika and the gigantic pile of weeds, we were very successful in cleaning out the garden. While there is still more that we need to get rid of, I am very confident that we are off to a great start in terms of this year's work. The gardening is still producing (mostly tomatoes)- check out our pluckin's! AND we have a pumpkin friend growing in the compost pile. Isn't he handsome?
